Assignment 1 of the BTech Media Course

I think that the first assignment went fairly well. I found that I already had a reasonably good idea on how to analyse advertisements from previous assignments I had done in other subjects, so when i started analysing normal ads, I found it quite easy. I understood how the design of ads could appeal to audiences and how certain aspects of an ad could make a particular audience relate to the advert.

The project did get harder because I found some of the instructions unclear and I would have found it easier if there was more description telling me exactly what I needed to get it correct first time.

There were parts of the assignment that I had not come across in other subjects and were unsure how to handle it. For example, I found it hard to find, and describe the unique selling proposition. I found it hard to describe exactly what it was and why it would help the ad to be more successful. However, I soon understood and revealed it in a piece of work and it would be easier if i did it again.

Another thing that I learnt from the assignment is the way that media work should be handled. I had to repeat several pieces of work because it was clear that i needed to do less writing describing the ad and more work analysing why it was, or wasn't successful. I could improve future work by keeping this in mind.

Locating decent adverts was sometimes hard. Especially the campaign. I found it very hard to find 3 or more adverts that were all for the same product, and i think this could have been improved by doing more work with magazines i had at come, or could buy, and not simply relying on the resources found in the classroom, because many other people in the class were trying to do the same thing. Also, I think i could have located ads and information by using more of the internet, as I dont think I researched enough on the web.

I do think that the assignment I was given eventually held all the requirements and I think that the checklist helped, but I think i could have judged the amount of time i needed and had more frequently, as I did not complete the entire assignment before christmas which was the deadline. In future situations, checking and estimating the amount of time will help me. Also, I will have to remember to give myself more time to repeat the piece of work if it is needed.
